Can bleaching your teeth damage the gums, tongue and/or teeth?

My teeth are so sensitive that I am not able to use any of that bleaching stuff..wish I could. I also have friends(MEN) who had it done professinally and they said their teeth hurt for at least a week. I guess it depends on if your sensitive to it or not.
