My mom wants me to get braces. I really don't need them, but my mom's a perfectionist. Anyway, I heard that they really hurt. If they do, is there any way to lessen the pain? And after my braces my mom wants to put me through the teeth-whitening operation. How does that work and does that hurt too?

Braces do not hurt, the only time they will hurt which you can cope with is when they get tightened but not all the time, i have braces on my top teeth and no one can tell they are even there, i was scared when i was first going to have them done and i didnt want them, but you will benefit from them, your teeth will be all nice and straight :)

Bleaching gel works best for stains that are yellow, or a mild brown color. These are usually caused by food, tobacco or coffee. Sometimes teeth will get dark brown or blue-gray stains that are the result of taking certain medications during tooth development, and these are harder to get rid of. The latter procedure can take six months of bleaching to achieve desired results. When teeth whitening is performed in the dentist's office, the dentist will cover the rest of the mouth aside from the teeth, put on the peroxide gel and use a laser or light that forces the peroxide to become oxygen molecules and attack the stains. The usual time for one visit is 1 to 2 hours.

At Home Procedures
Whitening at home can be supervised by a dentist too. The dentist makes a mouthpiece to fit both top and bottom teeth of each patient. Patients will then squirt some of the peroxide gel into these mouthpiece molds and keep them in the mouth for a certain amount of time. Because this peroxide gel is taken home, it's not as strong as the kind in the dental office. This process can take up to three weeks for results.
Over the counter tooth whitening kits are also available for those looking for a cheaper alternative. The kits work very similarly to the dental procedures, using a peroxide gel, and come in a generic tray or whitening strips that the consumer attaches to his teeth. Most of these over the counter methods are applied once or twice for 7 to 10 days.

Yes, braces and teeth whitening can hurt. You can talk to your orthodontist, however and tell him/her that you are afraid of it hurting. They can reduce the tightening that the braces would do, but it means you will have to wear them longer. Teeth whitening is usually a bleaching process. If you have porous/sensitive teeth, then this will make your teeth even more sensitive. Talk to your dentist before any of this happens, and express your concerns to the dentist. If you need to, you can have the dentist talk to your mother about your concerns, or you both can talk to her.

I used to have braces. It doesn't hurt when they put them on. But will ache a little afterwards for about 1 day, so have a small supply of pain relief tablets and yogurt etc coz it will hurt abit when you eat. After about a day or 2 the pain goes away and the annoyance of them being in your mouth and it will soon feel like you don't even have them. But they might ache a litte a once in a while - nothing unbearable.
But believe me it's worth it now I have perfect teeth and so will you.
