It's a tough question to answer, because on one side I would say, Yes absolutely and an another, I would have to say No. Here's what I mean.
Yes, it can cause unrealistic expectations, you look at those magazines and you think that by training and dieting a little you will can look like that...Not even close. But unfortunately that's how the world is today, and not just with fitness. Everything, everybody you see on tv, magazine, you want to look like them (fitness model, actors, singers...etc) But don't always have the capacity to do so. So how does it feel for somebody you have those expectations, but don't reach those results? Pretty bad. I mean, there is so many people that watch, shows like MTV, E channel..etc and say:" I want to have that, I want to be like that, I want to look like that" The world as it is now is all about competition, at work, at the gym, with the car you bought....Anything.
Now, on the other side, we want to see bigger, stronger, faster athlete, so we also are responsible for it. We are screaming of joy when w see B.Bonds hitting home run, and now because of steroids, we call him a cheater. That's just wrong. We ask for it. Guy like him work hard all their life to reach a goal, to give us our expectations! We have a guy like Schwarzenegger, who took steroids, who won Mr Olympia 7 times, became a famous actors and now he is governor! We like him and like what he do. Also, it's not just about steroids, what we know about diet and natural supplements is different than 50 years ago. They might not look like the guys in the magazines, but steroids were legal at that time and olympic athlete took them during the early 60's games. It's always been here, and I think always will be.
Like I said because of competition, we are just trying to be better in amy aspect in life (work, gym, as a parent...etc) There is more information, we learn more from others, so everybody is getting better. As for a fat happy guy who want to look like the guy on the cover of a fitness magazine, that's just wrong. That person should be smart enough, to feel an inspiration from that, and try to reach i own goal, not hope to be like that in one moth of work.
