what type of toothpaste works best for teeth whitening?

You cannot whiten your teeth with toothpaste. The amount of whitening ingredient they put in whitening toothpastes is not enough for the whitening effects I imagine you are looking for. They are better suited for helping you maintain your whitening after the treatment. Any manufacturer that promises whitening effects with toothpaste is obviously just trying to sell you the product.

Toothpastes don't actually whiten your tooth. It is the act of brushing that removes surface stains that makes them appear whiter. Toothpaste is not even needed to do this. Getting a coronal polish from a dental hygienist also helps to remove these stains. Intrinsic stains are harder to get rid of. Bleaching is an option for this and actually turns even stainless teeth relatively whiter, though it can cause sensitivity.
