Period while breastfeeding? maybe tmi, sorry?

Postby beaufort » Sun Aug 15, 2010 9:33 am

I posted this in Women's Health, but I'm posting it here, also.

I had my baby via Csection 6 weeks ago. I bled until about 4 1/2 to 5 weeks.

I started what I think is my period Sunday. I'm bleeding really bad. I soaked through a Kotex Super Plus tampon in about three hours. (I was ok'd by the doctor to wear them) It is a bright neon red. I'm also cramping extremely bad. They are not the worst cramps I've ever had, but they are pretty severe.

Most people I know said that they didn't get a period when they were breastfeeding. I did start the birth control pill the Monday before last, the 3rd. It is a breastfeeding safe birth control, I asked first.

Is this normal at all? Should I be concerned?

I wouldnt be too concerned. Some people get their first period after baby and never get it again while breastfeeding. I got mine at 6 weeks post partum and it was terrible. Exactly like you described. It was horrible, but now here we are 6 months in and I have not gotten it since that first one. Take some extra strength tylenol or ibuprofen and try to relax.

I bled for 3 weeks after I had my daughter, and got my period back at 4 weeks, I was exclusively breastfeeding.
Also the mini pill? gave me extremely bad cramping and my doctor suggested I stop taking it.

I got my periods while I was breastfeeding and it was irregular too. The gyne told it was because of the contraceptive shot that I got.

Every woman is different. My doctor told me that most women did not start their periods until at least 6 months postpartum and some not until their babies weaned from breastfeeding. However, I got mine back 2 months postpartum, despite breastfeeding on demand, as in whenever baby wanted to breastfed, I let her and she was breastfeeding every hour. For your first postpartum period it is normal to be a bit heavy and as for the cramping, they can get worse while breastfeeding since breastfeeding causes the uterus to contract. If you are really worried though, give your doctor a call.
