What is Lotion? Is it like toner? Do you use it instead of a face-wash or cleanser you use with water?

I am currently going through a change and learning about skin care and i want to know what is lotion.
I get the impression its part of a facial skincare regime, but i also hear its a moisturiser as well :S like a more watery moisturiser (not a cream)
I was looking in boots the other day at Neutrogena Triple Action Lotion and its the same as applying toner (with cotton wool)
is it like .. the 'lazy' persons face wash? (apologies if i offend by that)
If you can help de-confuse me I will be MOST Greatful
Thanks
:)

There are three parts to the known facial cleaning routine: cleanse, tone and moisturise. This should be done at least once a day, usually at night, to remove make up and dirt before going to bed. It's a good routine to get into long term as it helps keep your skin in good condition.

1. Use a cleanser (or lotion) using cotton wool
2. Use toner (which is watery) with cotton wool also - this removes any traces of cleanser and dirt.
3. moisturise (with finger tips, not cotton wool).

'Lotion' can refer to cleansers AND moisturisers - and yes it's like a less creamy version. (you can also get 'cleansing cream' or 'moisturising cream' - these are usually better for people with dry skin)

Yes in a way the cleanse-tone-moisturise routine can seem like a lazy persons face wash, however there is a reason for this: actual face wash can strip your skin of it's natural oils (you know when you wash your face and it sometimes makes your skin feel tight afterwards) , whereas this routine helps to maintain the natural balance.

Lotion is different things.
There's cleansing lotion, which is like a creamy cleanser or makeup remover type product.
There's also lotion like a toner, like Clinique has a clarifying lotion which is their toner, but its a liquid.
Then there's lotion like a moisturizer, like a cream. It depends how its used. Just because its called a 'lotion' it doesn't mean its a creamy consistency. It just depends how its used. Like if its a liquid and it says eye makeup remover lotion, then you use it to take off eye makeup. There's different uses for the word.

there are many types of lotions:
-face lotion
*face lotion should be oil free so that it doesn't clog your pores.
It should be used daily after washing your face so that your face doesn't dry out

-body lotion
*Body lotion can contain oil because it is not for use on the face but it's for everywhere else on the body.

-cleansing lotions
*Cleansing lotions are basically just cream face cleansers that you wash off after applying.
this is a facial wash that is made not to be as harsh as other facial cleansers and it is made mostly for dry skin.

-Toners
*If a product says clarifying lotion, that means that it is a toner not a moisturizer.
if a product has the term "lotion" on it AND it is watery, it is a toner NOT a moisturizer.

hope i helped
